Abstract
This review may be of interest to historians in that it sets out the history of the use of five protective coatings; showing conservators what finishes to expect on military objects. It may also help where we are required to use five protective coatings in museums, in building and showcase decoration for example. The review examines the field and discusses the mechanisms of action and the relative performance of fire retardant coatings, especially in relation to health and safety factors and to concern about increased smoke production from such coatings. -- AATA
