Abstract
Requirements for protective coatings for reinforced concrete are analyzed: the essential barrier properties are studied first, discriminating between reactions to ionic and gaseous aggressors, and taking weathering factors into consideration. Ease of application is discussed next, with regard to the composition of the substrate and the paint system used. Problems concerning the availability of information on durability testing and results are presented next; cost and quality control are further criteria of performance reviewed. -- AATA
