Restoration at the Skin Floor Warehouse at Tobacco Docks, and Saint Mark's Church, Silvertown are good examples of the problems of reconciling historical precedent with contemporary repair techniques. At Tobacco Dock some replacement stone was used, chosen for its strength and durability. Clearing of sound stone was carried out by scrubbing and dry grit blasting. Plastic repair was used in some cases. Much of the stone at Saint Mark's was in a poor condition and plastic repair was the principal means of restoring damaged stonework. Clearing was by scrubbing and wet grit blasting. Some stone replacement was carried out, Fine Doulting being considered the best match. -- AATA
