Paintings which are in apparently poor condition often fetch high prices at auction. This is because damage to paintings is mostly superficial, enabling restoration to be carried out successfully. Defects such as cracking, flaking, missing paint, tears, and poor restoration, and their effect on value, are examined in this article.
