Abstract
The authors discuss their research on deacidification and sizing of works of art on paper using five parts of a saturated solution of magnesium bicarbonate to one part of Klucel G (hydroxypropylcellulose) dissolved in IMS (industrial methylated spirit) at 5% w/v. The papers treated consisted of mechanical woodpulp and were generally alum-rosin sized. The substrate was very brittle and discolored with designs executed with water soluble inks. A case study details the technique of application of the gel, involving a number of thin coatings with an airbrush on the back of the drawing. Finally the object was lined with Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste.
