The pigments used for the wall paintings in the Sheesh Mahal, Nagaur, were identified by x-ray diffraction and microchemical techniques. The support of the painting was wall made of red sandstone blocks. The plaster was composed of a mixture of lime and an inert material. The technique of preparing the plaster was the Rajasthani technique in which burnishing and reburnishing the surface plaster plays a very important role. The various pigments were identified as follows: red pigments were of three types: red lead, red ochre and cinnabar; blue: indigo; green: malachite; yellow: orpiment; white: chalk, zinc white; gold. -- AATA
