70 murals, dating from the 8th-12th centuries A.D., were discovered in Dongola in 1975 by a group of Polish experts. They are the earliest found in Christian churches in the Sudan, and have been removed from the walls and transferred to a frame of mortar, linen, tissue paper and wax. They are now housed in the National Museum of Khartoum, and have thus been saved from disappearing into Lake Nubia (Lake Nasser), created by the Aswan High Dam. -- AATA
