The support of the Gerbier painting is made of a central rectangle of fabric with four strips sewn around it. During examination one of the questions asked was whether the strips were contemporary with the central section. By using lead isotope mass spectrometry, samples of lead taken from paint on each of the strips were found to have similar characteristics to each other and to the lead taken from the center section. This indication that all the lead came from the same source suggests that the strips of the painting were added and painted around the same time that the center section was painted.
