Some colors used in the wall paintings of the Tun-huang caves may have been altered through time and atmospheric conditions. The altered colors may lead to a misunderstanding of how the painting looked originally, and as a consequence, how illusionist the landscapes might have been. Examples of altered pigments in the caves are vermilion, red lead and indigo. The author requests complete chemical analysis to determine the original colours. -- AATA
