Abstract
Thomas opens with a definition of what printing paper implies: it must print accurately from a plate, go through presses and a bindery and handle well for the reader. He gives a brief history of paper and shows how the quality was much higher before the great demand for it came about. The use of alum was for convenience but added acidity. He describes Sutermeister's early experiments with lime mud. He found that acidity caused by alum was the most damaging aspect in paper. Properly purified wood fibers were more durable and permanent. In examining old books, alkaline paper held up much better. Book papers should contain residual calcium carbonate. He stresses that production should not be more expensive and elaborate than it has to be. He describes testing methods for longevity. There must be good storage. He strongly advises alkaline paper manufacture for the future. -- AATA
