Since the U.S. Bicentennial when Congress approved credits for historic renovation, the ensuing effort fueled by a growing interest in the past and by a 20% tax credit has been held back by a dearth of craftsmen who can do many types of fine work, from gold leaf to ornamental plaster, stained glass, stenciling interior walls, restoring aluminum or copper reliefs. Some materials, like certain stones and marbles, have become hard to find. But due to this rekindled interest, the dying crafts are now being taught again by institutions such as the National Park Service. -- AATA
