The relationship between effective stain removal methods and preservation of the degraded fibers underneath harmful stains is discussed. Some typical staine on historical textiles such as starch, iron and copper corrosion, and acid and alkaline perspiration were produced artifically on wool, silk, and cotton textiles and aged. Thirteen stain removal methods were applied. Colour change and whiteness of the fabrics as well as tensile strength of the fibers were measured.
