This study describes the wet cleaning facilities designed to minimalise handling and maximise the efficiency in cleaning large textiles at the Textile Conservation Studios, Hampton Court Palace. Analytical methods, such as pH measurement and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, are applied to the washing process. The monitoring of the detergent during washing allows informed judgements to be made concerning length of washing, rinsing, and extent of mechanical action required, and suggests the potential development of more scientifically controlled and effective wet cleaning of textiles. -- CAL
