Abstract
Autochromes, the color photography process invented by the Lumière brothers around 1903, commonly are considered stable. This study aims to determine the most fragile components and to find out if they have suffered modifications. Various specimens were analyzed by spectrophotometry and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). To appreciate their behavior during a long-term conservation program, several autochrome components, i.e., colorants and varnishes, were submitted to artificial aging under the influence of light and humid heat. The degradation of a particularly unstable colorant (orthochlorinated malachite green) was studied. The results of this study provide a warning about the fragility of certain components. -- AATA
