Abstract
Suzu ware was a principal medieval ware in eastern Japan and was produced in Suzu city, on the northeast side of the Noto peninsula, Ishikawa prefecture. Suzu ware seems to have been widely distributed along the Japan Sea coast to southern Hokkaido, and also in the Tohoku district. Discriminant analysis analysis between Suzu and other medieval wares in eastern Japan has not yet been developed. The potassium, calcium, iron, rubidium, and strontium contents of body clays determined by x-ray fluorescence analysis were effective in discriminating them by calculating the Mahalanobis' generalized distance D2 for each group. Suzu can be discriminated from Echizen (Fukui prefecture), Oenzawa (Niigata prefecture), and Tokita, Kumanari, and Mizunuma (Miyagi prefecture) wares, but not thoroughly from Moyazawa and Obatake (Akita prefecture) wares. -- AATA
