The main archaeological features of this 7-6th centuries B.C. site in central Italy are summarized. The area is rich in copper ores, so that production of copper alloys is not surprising; but analysis of certain slag samples indicates that iron was also produced there despite the absence of iron ores. It may have been obtained from iron-rich slags left from copper smelting. It is speculated that the reason for the decline of the site may have been economic and connected with the rise of iron smelting at Populonia, on the west coast of Italy. -- AATA
