Japanese Hinoki (Chamecyparis obtusa Endl.) was used as the standard and the pattern between 206 BC and 1986 AD was determined. A few examples of age determination by using this pattern were given. The ages of wooden pillars excavated at the Shigaraki palace site, Shiga prefecture, were found to be 743 AD, which agreed with the age given by historians. The ages of Buddhist images and buildings of the Hokoji temple, Tokuji, Yamaguchi prefecture, indicated their completion date to be later than the 13th century. -- AATA
