By means of photoelectrons, produced in thin heavy-metal-screens by x-rays, it is possible to recognize watermarks in stamps or passports, which normally are not visible. Compared to beta-ray-techniques used in earlier years, exposure time is very short; maximum contrast for each paper thickness can be produced by optimization with regard to tube voltage, filter thickness, screen thickness, and type of film.
