Abstract
By studying the coloring materials and supports used in Antiquity with ritual purposes (magic and funerary purposes above all), we can establish associations between color, metal-support, lapidary-support, organic-support, and magical-religious beliefs in ancient cultures, broadening our understanding of their social and cultural customs. Archaeometry is called to play a key role in this endeavor. Physical-chemical analysis, discover and measure the precise materials of these ritual-magical colors and supports, unveiling the connections between materials, religion, culture and society, allowing these associations to be traced through Antiquity. Magical support (i.e. copper, lead, iron, mercury, gold, and silver) is also the surface where art, technology and religion often coalesced into one indissoluble entity. In this last sense, the study of the coloring materials and supports, specially to relative of metal supports, but not only them, used in ancient rituals emphasizes the idea that whenever we speak about, say, gold, silver, copper, iron, galena, among others, there is a quantitative and qualitative leap beyond to say yellow, gray, green, red, and black, respectively.
