Abstract
Finding from these investigations do both, enlighten the history of those signposts as part of exploitation at that time as well as being the basement of further research steps concerning conservation of cultural heritage made from painted or coated iron. The multi-layered paint structure of the objects described in this text lead to the assumption that they were repainted. Different pigment mixtures for same colour areas as well as several binders were in use for the layers. By means of elemental analysis inorganic pigments could be identified as well as synthetic organic materials as e.g. alkyds, cellulose nitrate or PR3 pigment (toluidine red) were detected by instrumental analysis on a molecular level. This relatively new materials for beginning of 40ies of 20th century show developments of colour industry at that time, when synthetic materials began to be produced for commercial use especially by German producers.
