Abstract
Paper acidity, resulting from the use of wood pulp in the paper manufacturing process, has become a problem in libraries; the alum and rosing sizing which prevents ink from bleeding contain aluminum sulfates. The Library of Congress is attempting to deal with paper acidity on a large scale by setting up a test plant using diethyl zinc deacidification. The limitations of the Wei T'o process, which the Canadian Library and Archives routinely use, are the small number of items that can be treated at one time and the manual sorting of books to identify those which are suitable for treatment. The diethyl zinc deacidification treatment and hazards inherent to the chemical are described. Texas Alkyls has continued with the project successfully so far. The production of alkaline paper is less polluting; manufacturers should be motivated by a moral incentive. Several projects at the Library of Congress and at the National Archives illustrate the problems of paper conservators. -- AATA
