The fresco <i>Apotheosis of George Washington</i> by Constantino Brumidi has recently been cleaned under the auspices of Bernard Rabin. It is alleged that the 1969 cleaning and restoration by Allyn Cox was merely a mixing of pigments to match the dirt, repainting without cleaning. Sheldon and Caroline Keck, Paolo and Laura Mora, and Robert Feller were among the advisors on this project. Formula B-57, used for cleaning, washed the Cox gouache overpainting off without the need for additional solvents. Acryloid B-72 was used to reattach loose paint. Inpainting was done with watercolors. The plaster has been identified as a baroque mixture: a plaster of lime with sand. -- AATA
