It is shown how both the chemical core of a titanium dioxide pigment and the surface coating, by careful control of particle size and surface properties, contribute to overall paint performance. Critical areas covered include opacity, dispersion, surface charge and gloss. Differences in surface coatings for gloss grade and emulsion grade pigments are indicated. -- AATA
