Abstract
The author discusses the materials and structure of the various types of East Asian paintings (handscrolls, hanging scrolls, screens) and shows how the choice of materials promoted stability or instability of the picture surface. He describes the problems which arise when scroll paintings are remounted on rigid panels or displayed for long periods of time, and indicates how traditional methods of storage (drawers, boxes) protect scroll paintings.
