Abstract
Since the publication in 1983 of a high-precision calibration curve based on Irish oak tree-rings, it has become possible to recalibrate radiocarbon dates from Egypt and Nubia with much greater precision. Recent dates from Amarna have reinforced this, and demonstrate the problems and advantages of the high-precision curve. The range is still more than one century for any date (even at low standard deviation) and the Irish oak curve definitely establishes the fact that, because of wiggles in the curve, there may be two or more dates applicable to any given level of Carbon-14 in an object. However dates are obtainable which are compatible with the accepted astronomical chronology of Egypt. Six tables of results from different periods and sites within Egypt and Nubia are presented and discussed and the future of Carbon-14 dating in Egyptology considered. The Irish oak curve is seen not as a solution to dating problems at present, but as a means of highlighting deficiencies in the available dates. High precision dating of well-chosen samples is needed for future work. -- AATA
