Abstract
It has been determined that the building stone from the deposits in the area of the Outer Dinarides contains a quantity of anions of initial soluble salts (chlorides and sulfates). These data permit a comparison of initial soluble salts in quarry stone with the quantity of salt found in the damaged stone of buildings and monuments. Efflorescence and subflorescence in the stone covering of buildings are generally attributed either to the discharge of alkali from cement mortar used to bind built-in stone plates and from the concrete structures of stone-covered buildings, or to the atmospheric pollution in urban and industrial environments, and by capillary moisture rise, respectively. The sources of possible efflorescence and subflorescence should be sought outside its initial content. -- AATA
