This article describes the complex history of manufacture and stewardship of an important suite of Louis XVI period French Royal Furniture owned by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts referred to as the Swan/<i>Sene</i> Suite. It presents an overview of the context of its initial commission by Thierry de Ville d’Avray and his relationship with the multitude of designers, craftsmen and silk weavers involved in its fabrication. Its equally complex history of ownership in the United States resulted in a broad range of condition which required the expertise of conservators, scientists and curators to interpret the existing evidence. We devised a multi faceted intervention using both nontraditional and traditional materials and traditional techniques. The goal was to accurately present the aged gilded wood while still suggesting chased bronze at the same time balancing its appearance with new silk show fabric for display in a museum gallery setting.
