The confusion in the decision-making process in selecting proper conservation treatments of bronze statuary results from the biases behind the perspectives of those responsible for the care and maintenance. Treatments fall into three broad categories: 1) removal from the elements; 2) strip, recolor, and apply protective coating; 3) clean and apply protective coating. Specific case histories involving outdoor bronzes at various Park Service sites are discussed. The Park Service is sponsoring research into the effects of acid rain on park resources.
