In 1905, the Field Museum acquired an entire Maori meeting house. In preparation for a total renovation of the Pacific Hall, plans are being made to conserve and relocate the house in the new exhibition space. This paper discusses this planning process. The proposed conservation treatment of the various elements of the house is outlined, including decisions on the kind and degree of conservation. The discussion of the proposed reassembly of the house addresses the facts that the house can no longer be weight-bearing and that many elements are currently wrongly positioned. The determination of proper positioning will include the use of archival and photographic documentation as well as careful inspection of individual elements for clues of the original construction. The type of outside consultants necessary for such a project will also be discussed. An important part of the paper concerns the interaction of the curatorial and conservation staff with the Maori people, with the amount and type of involvement of the Maori family that originally made the house. The making of missing elements by the Maori is discussed. The necessary ceremonies and rituals will be observed to preserve the integrity of the house at all stages of the procedure. In such a way, it is hoped that the conservation of the house will become in itself an ethnographic exhibit.
