Abstract
The purpose was to find conservation treatments for camwood objects. These were made almost exclusively by the Kuba tribes of Central Zaire. Simple tests for the solubility of camwood in commonly used solvents are described. Consolidation of broken and often brittle edges was tested with various toluene soluble adhesives. Lack of sample pieces limited testing to broken edges of actual objects. Comparative evaluation of color changes was done visually and a suitable method was developed, consisting of two applications of 5% and one of 10% Acryloid B-72 in toluene. Following consolidation, adhesion of broken fragments was achieved successfully with 40% P.V.A. (AYAF) in toluene. Due to unavailability of strength testing machines, the adhesive was determined as appropriate if the joint could resist a strong pull with the hands without breaking or moving. A gap filler, Sculptamold (American Art Clay Co.), was chosen following a series of tests for solubility in appropriate solvents, similarity of components, texture, and reactions, reversibility and consideration of technical data.
