A safe method of bonding fragile fibers onto a support fabric of suitable weight is described. Two essential criteria were considered in selecting a suitable adhesive: it must be light in weight and sufficiently mobile to impregnate the support fabric. Five poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions were tested for color, clarity, and reversibility, both in the short and long term and of these, three were found to be satisfactory. These adhesives were used to bond a support fabric to fragile woven fiber decoration by impregnating the support fabric with the adhesive and sealing it to the woven fibers with a heated spatula. Since the three samples of adhesives varied in strength, they could be successfully used in supporting different strengths of fiber within the same object, ranging from the severely weakened to the more substantial.
