Pigment-painted patterns are encountered by the textile conservator, especially on ethnographic examples. In this paper interdisciplinary treatments of paper, painting, and object conservation approaches are described. Case histories include: large South Pacific tapa cloths, torn and sharply folded at an unknown date which were scheduled for a loan exhibition, a series of Peruvian painted textiles analyzed before establishing a conservation program and the treatment of various Oriental textiles of silk with gilded designs.
