Many different consolidants have been used in the past on cellulosic fiber materials, with varying degrees of success. The most popular of these consolidants are examined briefly, and their performance commented upon. The consolidants in current use, including hydroxypropyl cellulose, are then discussed. Paper conservators have been using hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) -- Klucel grade G -- for some time, both as a consolidant and as an adhesive. Case histories are given of the treatment of fishing nets, grass skirts, and a straw beehive using Klucel E, a more flexible grade.
