A technique which was developed over 10 years ago for the mounting of bark paintings for storage and display purposes has been improved to provide a more accurate and effective support system. The painting is first wrapped in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) film followed by an outer wrapping of aluminum foil, then laid face down on cushions arranged to fit the contours of the bark. A Fibreglas backing is laid onto the wrapped bark using up to five layers of split chopped strand mat, depending on the size of the bark. Flanged nuts are set into the final layer of resin and glass fiber as part of the final attachment system. On curing, the bark is turned face up, the aluminum foil is removed, and the outline of the bark traced onto the Fibreglas backing, which is then cut to size. A cushioning layer of polyethylene foam is cut to the size of the bark and placed between the bark and backing. The bark is then attached to the backing with simple U-shaped plastic clips screwed into place from behind the bark backing using nylon screws fitted through pre-drilled holes into the threaded return of the clip. The whole unit is attached to the back of a wooden box-frame with bolts inserted through the back to connect with the flanged nuts previously embedded in the fiberglass backing. A clear acrylic cover is then screwed into place.
