Abstract
A purpose-built laser profilometer is described. It can provide a 2-D map of surface topography or reflectivity: the latter may be useful for generating chemical information. Surface mapping was used to detect the small changes in a piece of cellulose acetate which had been gently swabbed with water. The method could be used for in situ cleaning tests on objects in a normal atmosphere.
