The polyacrylic acid Carbopol has been employed for several years as a gel formative. Characteristics and the ageing process of Carbopol gels are discussed in the light of their application on paper. Investigations showed that neutralizing agents which are necessary to achieve gel formation, are migrating with the moisture to the substrate to which the gel is applied. Special attention is drawn to the behaviour of (organic) amines used as neutralizing agents.
