Abstract
Studies have detected two different layers on the surfaces of the Parthenon, as well as all the other ancient and Roman monuments in Athens. A recording of the recession of these layers, as a result of acid rain, is reported. The external layer, without oxalates, originated from human activity, and very strong indications for the same origin are found on the internal layer with oxalates.
