Abstract
Deals with the scope and application of nondestructive remote sensing techniques for the examination and recording of historic buildings and archaeological sites. The methods described are mainly based on photographic principles and the range of equipment required is described; a band classification for multispectral survey is presented. Remote sensing is defined in this context as the sensing of electromagnetic phenomena and is differentiated from geophysics and other forms of nondestructive survey. Discusses six main fields of application with case studies for each: open fabric survey; subsurface feature detection; painted surfaces; historic window glass; inscribed and carved surfaces; and areas prior to and during excavation. The methods presented offer the possibility of wide-scale nondestructive survey to recover nonvisible archaeological information, particularly in historic buildings. -- AATA
