Abstract
The dendrochronological potential of Pinus sylvestris from the Scottish Highlands is explored for annual ring width and maximum latewood density. Between-site crossdating is good for ring width series from some sites and excellent for maximum latewood density in the majority of cases. The strong crossdating of maximum latewood density across the Highland region appears to be associated with a clear correlation between this variable and summer temperatures. An application of this finding to the reconstruction of past climate is discussed.
