Abstract
Any material of natural origin that contains protein or protein breakdown products has the potential for age assessment using the amino acid racemization dating technique. Because this technique relies on physicochemical processes, in contrast to methods based on radioactive decay, environmental factors have important effects on the rates of racemization and hence the determination of age. Emphasizes the need for a greater understanding of the diagenetic protein breakdown process for the method to gain acceptance as a reliable and independent dating method.
