Proposals are made for a more accurate vocabulary in describing needlework techniques: 1) deflected element embroidery: fabric elements are intentionally misaligned for design effects; 2) withdrawn element work: fabric elements are reduced for design effects; 3) cut fabric work: shapes are cut from a foundation fabric.
