A dragon pattern of silver inlay was found by x-ray radiography under rust on the iron fitting at the bottom of the sheath of an excavated iron sword with a plain ring-shaped pommel. The hard rust layer was almost completely removed with a dental grinder leaving only a very thin layer of rust on the inlay which was then removed with the airbra-sive. Various abrasives were tested and glass beads were found to be most convenient. When the airbrasive was used, there were almost no disadvantages noted except that microscopic recesses were found on the silver surface because it is hit by the glass grains, and that the surface lost luster. However, the surface can regain the luster by mild polishing. The use of the airbrasive may be universally effective for exposing inlays covered by rust. -- AATA
