Quartzose temper sands in prehistoric potsherds from Tonga and the Marquesas, dating to about 300 A.D., are mineralogically different from indigenous sands, but are the same as temper sands in potsherds from sites in Fiji. Sand grain types were counted in thin sections of potsherds which were examined petrographically. -- AATA
