Two Juvet time globes by the same manufacturer were found to have different shell constructions. While one, made by layering strips of paper on a a round form, represented traditional 19th century globe-making methods, the second was made by steam-molding of wet-broke between hemispherical male and female dies, as indicated by an American patent of 1879, issued to James Arkell. This technique resembles a modification of an earlier process patented in England 30 years earlier, by Theodore Hyla Jennens, to make japanned papier-mâché furniture. The developments in the history of papier-mâché which culminated in the connection between the British and American patents is outlined. A comparison is made between the structure, condition and cleaning of the varnish layers of the two globes. Reference is made to various documented treatments of globes, and some ethical considerations are posed.
