A method was devised to remove chlorine contaminants formed on cannons during long submersions under water. The cannons were wrapped in aluminum foil and soaked for two weeks in drums filled with a mixture of a lye substance and water. A chemical reaction was produced causing the aluminum covering to become contaminated as the cannons were gradually freed of the chlorine particles.
