Abstract
When The American Film Institute was established in 1967 as a private, non-profit organization, its first priority was the preservation of American films. It was estimated that over half of the feature films produced in the US had been lost. The article describes: the development of nitrate and safety base movie film; the fire hazards of nitrate film; the deterioration of nitrate film; and, copying nitrate film onto safety film.
