Abstract
The concentration of 9 major and minor constituents was determined in ancient bronze artifacts by neutron and photon activation analysis. The analysis was accomplished, without chemical separation, on 10 mg samples. In the neutron activation, 2 sets of irradiated materials were used: one to determine the constituents producing short-lived nuclides and the 2nd for the determination of long-lived nuclides. Concentration levels were calculated by comparison with standards. Photon activation was produced with bremsstrahlung in the 45 degree facility at N.B.S. electron LINAC. N. B.S. Std. Ref. Material 124b was treated simultaneously and used as a standard to determine the concentration levels. Reproducibility is fairly good and precisions of the order of + 1-2% are obtained by neutron activation analysis for major constituents. -- AATA
