Abstract
Most artificial sources used for general illumination radiate a very small percentage of their absolute energy in the U.V. region. 84 colored textiles were exposed to natural daylight. Half of the sample was covered by a UV absorbing filter. 57 samples showed equal fading under both conditions for an exposure of 194,000 footcandle hours, and 24 samples showed slightly greater fading without the filter, although the difference was not that significant. Experimental results indicate that the fading of colored textiles by daylight is principally due to radiant energy in the visible spectrum. The authors also concluded from their previous work that 1) the law of reciprocity does not apply under practical conditions of artificial light; 2) Since oxygen is necessary for photochemical fading, a vacuum will greatly reduce fading; 3) Humidity over a wide range does not appreciably affect the rate of fading; 4) Temperatures in the range of 85° to 120° F. do not appreciably influence the rate of fading, although higher temperatures will accelerate the process; 5) Radiation throughout the UV and visible regions up to approximately 580 nm, the orange-red, will cause fading; and 6) Different illuminants vary in their fading power for equal footcandle hours of exposure.
