The several thousand crucible-like clay objects called <i>briquetage</i> discovered in 1974 in Werl (West Germany, about 30 km. east of Dortmund) were suspected to represent a device to obtain solid salt from natural brine (see Leidinger, in <i>Archäologische Korrespondenzblatt</i>, Volume 13 (1983), p. 269-274). This idea was reinforced by ethnographic observations made in Niger (see Gouletquer, P.L. and Kleinmann, D. in <i>Mitteilungen der Anthropoligische Gesellschaft in Wien</i>, Volume 108 (1978), p. 41-49), where quite similar salt ovens are used even today. The process, using modern clay reproductions of the Werl finds, is demonstrated.
