In the 1880s, the Seminole Indians of the Florida Everglades began embellishing their clothing with colorful and ingenious patchwork bands. These designs are small, and since it was impractical to piece them by hand, the Seminoles developed a technique called strip piecing, which involves machine-stitching strips of fabric into sets, cutting the sets into segments, and reassembling the segments to form bands.
